A Call to Mom

A phone call to Mom from our favorite reporter

TV Reporters are supposed to write stories as though they are having a telephone conversation with their mothers. The technique is supposed to make the story clear and conversational. But if today's reporters talk to their mother's as they write news copy, this must be what a call sounds like:

Phone:   RRRRRiiiiinnnnnggg.

 Mom: Hello?

Reporter: 3-2-1 - It was everyone's worst nightmare, tonight. A horrific crash leads to the watery death of two wholly innocents.

 Mom: Holy Innocents?

Reporter: Imagine yourself driving along a two-and-a-half-mile long bridge across a 40-foot deep river and being tossed into the water by an eighteen wheeler tonight.

 Mom: I couldn't imagine.

Reporter: 43-year old Richard Roe and 29-year old Jane Doe began their date with death tonight when a ladder allegedly fell off a pickup driven by 37-year old Zack Zoe. The 43-year old and the 29-year old were out of Bell. The 37-year old stopped his truck to pick up the ladder.

Mom: Now what happened?  Who was Holy?

Reporter: Their plight continued as the 37-year old continued. Police are expected to file charges, but it's not certain against who.

 Mom: Charges for what?

Reporter: An eighteen wheeler was traveling across the bridge tonight and reportedly swerved to miss the ladder. The eighteen wheeler apparently dodged and bumped into the truck driven by the 43-year old.

Mom: And that knocked them into the water?

Reporter: The truck skidded 12 feet along the concrete fence at the edge of the bridge, according to police reports. Then it fell into the water, sinking beneath the waves and leading to the untimely deaths of the 43-year old and the 29-year old tonight. Back to you.

Mom: What is a concrete - never mind.  Did anyone try to save them?

Reporter: An off-duty firefighter tried to short circuit the shocking tragedy by diving into the water, but he was unable to reach the unlucky victims. Back to you.

Mom: What does the Sheriff's Office say about safety on the bridge.

Reporter: As you might guess, the incident has sent shock waves through the Sheriff's Office tonight. A spokesman says bridge safety is under investigation tonight, and will continue tomorrow. Back to you.

Mom: Did the poor people killed have families?

Reporter: Uh, uh - Family members were not present at the scene at the time of the deadly incident, and were not immediately known to the police. That's all we have from the scene tonight. We'll have more tomorrow. Back to you.
