Veteran's Day

Veteran's Day remembered

Thank you to the more than 50-million people who have donned the uniform of the United States military. This was originally Armistice Day - commemorating the end of The Great War, The World War, The War To End All Wars. Now, it's simply known as World War I - we are now in the 4th.

And a special thanks to my Pacetti and del Rosario Castel ancestors who fought the Indian Wars here in Florida, my Walker ancestors who fought the British in the Revolutionary War, my Simmons ancestors who fought with Lee, Gumersindo Antonio Pacetti who fought the Spanish in Cárdenas then was the mayor of St. Augustine, Florida who surrendered the city to the Federal fleet then escaped to Cuba and hosted the two members of the Confederate cabinet who escaped, to my grandfather who served in World War I, to my father who served in World War II and Korea, and to my classmate Pierce Arant who died in Vietnam.

Today here in Jacksonville, the Korean War vets are getting special attention. It's often been called America's forgotten war. I remember the fury expressed by a large number of folks as the war morphed in the MSM into a "conflict."
