Help for the people

There's no sign fidel is helping his new best friend, Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco, so its up to us to help the people of her state and Mississippi.  The big time bloggers are planning to begin something tomorrow, but it looks like help is needed right now. There's one organization I know of that has helped people for at least 100-years without a hint of scandal - it delivered mail, food, water and coffee to my grandfather in the trenches in France during WWI, to my father in England during WWII, and even to me during my time in the Army, plus it helps the down and out every day of the year. That's the Salvation Army.

Here's the link to their Southeastern U.S. web page - they are not only providing food, water and shelter - they've also set up a radio network to help folks locate each other.

You can telephone donations to their main headquarters at 1-800-SALARMY or donate over their web page here.

The third largest relief organization in the U.S. is the Southern Baptist Convention. Here's a link to their disaster relief page showing what they have organized so far. The don't seem to have an on-line donation site, but say to contact the state organizations. If you are in the Southeast or Heartland, I'd suggest you telephone your local Baptist church and see if they, like some churches here in Jacksonville, are putting up refugees.

Also, if you are in an area where refugees are congregating, and you have a business that can take in some temporary workers, this might be a good source. It looks as though these folks may be refugees for a long time and a lot of them are going to need jobs.

Val has more suggestions here.  Instapundit has more here.
