DC Announces Revenue Plan
Thursday, June 23, 2005   By: Juan Paxety

Washington, D.C. Mayor Anthony A. Williams announced this afternoon a plan to put the district's government in the red.  Mayor Williams says far too much of the land within the district is now put to unproductive, non-tax generating purposes.

On the heels of this morning's decision regarding eminent domain, Mayor Williams announced an agreement with local real estate developers to seize the land presently occupied by the U.S. Supreme Court building (a non-tax paying entity) and to convert it to a higher and better use. One local developer says he's already completed a contract to build a Walmart on the site. Another points out the U.S. Capitol generates no tax income, either, and that The Disney Corporation is interested in putting a point of destination tourist attraction on the site.
