Dumb Reporting Once Again
Monday, April 25, 2005   By: Juan Paxety

Here's another case of reporting that's just dumb. Jacksonville blogger Rogers Cadenhead had the foresight to reserve domain names for potential names of the new pope.  One was BenedictXVI.com. The Washington Post learned of the name reservation, then the Today Show featured Rogers. He clearly said in the newspaper, on his web page, and on-air that he reserved the names to keep pornographers from using it. He said he didn't know what he was going to do with it.

Since, Rogers has emailed the Vatican offering the name, and in the meantime, he's donating any income from the site (and his own site as well) to the charity, Modest Needs.

Enter the local media.  First Coast News (local Channels 12 (NBC) and 25 (ABC)) reported incorrectly that Roger, as they called him,  was selling the domain name.  This after someone using a computer at First Coast News had looked at 115-pages of Rogers' site before the newscast - including the page where Rogers says he was reserving the name to keep it away from pornographers.

This is just dumb.  All too many news people decide what a story is about before doing any investigation - then refuse to change their view of the story despite what their investigation might uncover. I once worked for a station where we were told to write the final paragraph of the story before doing any interviews.  In other words, come to the conclusion before doing any investigation. Never let the facts get in the way of a good story, I guess.  It's just idiocy.
