I've linked to Kevin Sites' blog in the past. He was a CNN reporter for awhile in Iraq. Now he works freelance for NBC. It's his video of the Marine shooting a terrorist in Fallujah that's causing all the stir.
What do I think? I've been asked because in a previous life I was a TV news producer. As usual, I have an opinion.
I don't blame Kevin Sites at all. He was a reporter/photographer photographing what was happening. That's what he was supposed to be doing.
I don't fault the MSM in general. Once the Marine's began investigating the incident, it was a news story.
I do blame the news managers at NBC. I think they should have weighed the duty to air newsworthy video against their ability to put it in context - and keep the story in context. That latter is impossible under the circumstances of a worldwide media.
They should have waited. If the military found the Marine guilty, and maybe even if he is charged, the video becomes a legitimate part of the story. Until then, it's just sensationalism.
