Success and approval

Most people are so far into the depths of the box, they don't realize the box exists. They will advocate "outside the box" thinking, but will be wholly unable to see it when it presents itself. Don't ever let this kind of person have any bit of control over you.

Seek to know yourself - seek to control only yourself - and understand that the only approval that's truly important is your own.

I saw practical examples of this in TV. Most of my career was spent going to last place stations and building up their ratings. When I would arrive, the folks in the newsroom would be crying and whining that Station A was doing this, or, Station B was doing that. My first job was to get it through their heads that they had no control over Station A and B - that they could only control what they, themselves did. Then I taught them our new way of doing things.

The important breakthrough would come when the folks would begin to judge their work through their own eyes, not the eyes of the other stations. When they would speak approvingly of their own work, and disapprovingly of the work of the other stations, we would be on our way to success. When we gave ourselves approval, the approval of others (the viewers) came along, too.
