Mr. Bush's UN Political Plan
Tuesday, February 25, 2003 By: Juan Paxety
Trying to roll 9
My old friends at Fox News are reporting that the Bush administration is beginning a 10-day push to get nine Security Council votes for the 19th Iraq resolution. The wording is interesting. It doesn't say to pass the resolution - that would require avoiding a veto from France, China and Russia. It says get nine votes, which would be the majority necessary to pass absent a veto. Is this the way to get the needed political cover for Tony Blair and others? This will be interesting to watch.
I didn't vote for Mr. Bush (folks who know me know I haven't voted for a Republican presidential candidate since I fell for Richard Nixon's secret plan to end the war - they also know I've never voted for a Democrat), but I've learned to have great respect for his political prowess. Perhaps he will be able to get his nine votes - then, who knows? The French may retreat from yet another position.
