Sniper Profile
Thursday, October 17, 2002   By: Juan Paxety

I had some thoughts about the sniper - I'll call him the Beltway Blaster - in an email I sent to Little Bobby. I'll just post the email in which I discuss why I don't think this guy is a traditional serial killer.

My main research is the book by Robert Ressler, one of the FBI agents who created the Behavioral Sciences section. There's also a book by one of the agents who worked closely with him - John something - who was kind of the model for Frank Black (Millennium).
Anyway, first, there are serial killers - people who kill in a series, as opposed to spree killers - people who go into the post office, or a fast food restaurant and blast away until they run out of ammo or someone caps them.
There are two types of serial killers - organized and disorganized. The disorganized are the ones who are "crazy" in the conventional sense - usually paranoid schizophrenic - they are usually disheveled in dress, their homes are a mess, they don't usually function well enough to do things such as drive. They choose victims by happenstance, kill them where they find them, use whatever is available to kill with, desecrate the body with whatever is available, and leave the body where it falls, often wandering off with the victims blood all over them. An example is a loon who catches a woman walking alone at night, strangles her with the strap on her purse, stips her naked and writes messages on her body with a felt-tipped pen he finds in her purse, and leaves her body on the sidewalk. If he escapes the scene, it's just by luck. He takes no steps to hide.
An organized serial killer is not suffering from a traditional, recognized mental illness. He kills to actualize his sexual fantasies (even when the killing doesn't involve sex as normal folks think of it.) He usually functions well enough to lure a victim into his trap (think of Ted Bundy), he has the materials to restrain the victim with him, he carries the victim to a remote location, kills with a weapon he has brought with him and carries away with him, and dumps the body either in a place where it will not be easily found, or if found, in a place not easily connected to him. He plans his escape.
The DC guy is killing in an organized manner - he carries his weapon with him, he carries it away, he takes careful steps to escape. But he doesn't have the intimate closeness to his victims like an organized serial killer does - remember they are actualizing sexual fantasies. This guy just doesn't fit the usual profiles.
Also, there is a good bit of speculation that the gun may not be a .223 after all - it could be an Ak-74, the type Osama is using to practice with in the tape we've all seen a million times.
Here's a link to an intelligent discussion of this theory - read the comments for the real meat, and a couple of scary thoughts:

My theory - he's not going to do any more shooting this week - he'll now wait for the weekend.
