Margot Adler Update
Tuesday, February 05, 2002 By: Juan Paxety
I sent an email to Margot Adler of NPR after hearing her story concerning Justice Anthony Kennedy’s trip to a New York high school as part of his “Dialogue on Freedom” program. Some of the students were allowed to discuss freedom with Justice Kennedy, and Ms. Adler pointed out, first, that they were members of an advanced placement history class, and second, that the majority were Asian-American. I asked in my email why she felt it important to include the race/ethnic background of the students in the story. Here’s her reply:
I included it, because it was so noticable that styvesant, the premier school in nyc had almost no blacks and hispanics in the whole schole which is 46 asian... I just thought that was interesting... I actually know why that is, it is because asian parents are very concerned about education, put their kids, here , in saturday schools, and bus them in from outying boroughs to take the syvesant and hunter test... as a result, hunter for example which is totally multicultural in the lower school, is about 60 percent asian in the high school.. I thought it was interesting to mention because I frankly think that kennedy got a less hard time from the kids because they were all white and asian... but that's just what I think... as one of the emails I got said, in response... if he had been a school in the south bronx, he would have gotten a very different reception. margot adler
I continue to think it sounds racist and collectivist.
