Blanco Fears Offending castro
Tuesday, March 15, 2005   By: Juan Paxety

Millions of dollars

No posting for two days because something hosed my computer.  I want to blame fidel, but I have no proof.

Anyway, while I was away, Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco had dinner with fidel, although she says she didn't plan to meet him.  Her spokesman tells the Associated Press, as reported by the Leesville Leader, that the governor didn't want to offend the dictator.

''But by the time the request was made for her to meet with him, she felt she didn't want to slight him in any way, because two contracts had already been signed for millions of dollars.''

Millions of dollars. Fifteen million to be exact. American business/government partnership capitalism at its worst.  Businesses trading with dictators for money and politicians buying votes. And fidel staying in power. And ordinary American citizens prohibited by our own government from visiting the island or sending money to individuals where it might to some real good.

The policy is insane.  Either enforce the embargo or end it.  This middle ground is doing nothing but propping up fidel and continuing the enslavement of the Cuban people.
