Florida taxes
Tuesday, March 27, 2007   By: Juan Paxety

How will the state extract its lucre?

Henry posted at Babalu asking folks to support a proposed law that would reduce or eliminate property taxes for homeowners in Florida.  The property taxes will be replaced by sales taxes.  I have a concern in that renters don't appear to get the benefit of the tax reduction - in fact, they will have to pay the increased sales tax and at least some of the property taxes. Here's my email to the folks promoting the new tax plan:

As a renter, this proposal seems to shift the state's tax burden from more affluent homeowners to less affluent people like me.  I will have to pay the increased sales tax, and will not get much of the benefit of the reduction in property tax.  While homesteaded folks will have a chance to wholly eliminate their property taxes, renters, according to the information on your site, will not.  We will continue to pay property taxes and also have to pay the sales tax.

If I am incorrect, please tell me how.

As always, I'll post a reply when and if I receive one.
