Don't Cry For Me Venezuela, or Hugo and Juan
Wednesday, March 22, 2006 By: Juan Paxety
Hugo wants to restore the former residence of Peron
Who, you ask? That's Juan Peron - you remember, former strongman president of Argentina? OK, then, the husband of the character Madonna played in Evita. Yeah, that guy.
It seems now that our friend hugo chávez wants to restore the house Peron lived in back in 1972. It would not be surprising if chávez idolized Peron. Peron was a person on the fringes of both totalitarianism and populism. He allowed escaped Nazis into Argentina and was accused of being a fascist himself. But he talked big about social programs, so the social reformers and leftists/commies found plenty to admire. He was a populist autocrat, a thief, and a militarist - just like chávez hopes to be. Who will be hugo's Madonna?
