New Media and Old

How is PJM like the major media?

The new entity for the New Media opened in New York with a splashy party a few weeks back It began as Pajamas Media - then became OSM (Open Source Media), then when the possibility of trademark violations came up, it switched back to Pajamas Media. The link to the site is here. The idea, I think, was that bloggers would report the news, would share links with each other, and share revenue.

I'm not sure, because I'm not sure anyone is really clear. I received the first "agreement" from Pajamas Media and read it thoroughly. It seemed to me that I was promising to work with them, but they promised nothing in return.  I decided I didn't want to mess with it.

Today, Steve H. is making fun of PJM again. He's laughing that Glenn Reynolds continues to pump a "blogjam" as they call it as PJM on who should control the Internet.

Oh, God. Oh, God. I'm dying here. Am I dreaming this? Glenn Reynolds is STILL pimping that "Who Should Control the Internet" "Blogjam" thing. People were making fun of that LAST WEEK for being a month behind the times!

Who should control the Internet? I can think of ONE group of confused mega-bloggers who I'd scratch off the list.

It strikes me as funny that it took only a couple of weeks for PJM to run into one of the big problems of traditional media - how do you promote something as quickly morphing as news?  We had this problem constantly at TV stations. The promotions department would come to the news department and ask about the next day's news. The promotions people wanted to make a promo to run in prime time, overnight and the next day - they wanted to know what stories we would be doing the next day.

How do you answer that? How do you know what story will be topical until that story happens? You don't. Instead, you make up some kind of story that might be interesting, assign a reporter to write it, and give the information to the promotions department. You create news in order to promote.

That's why you get stories, such as this one from WJXT-TV in Jacksonville -

Certified is the buzz word for buying a used car. Tonight on The Ten O'Clock News, is it worth paying hundreds more for the guarantee that a vehicle is practically as good as new?

Category 5: Storm Surge

By Donna Hicken
JACKSONVILLE, FL -- No one living today has ever seen Jacksonville experience a category four or five storm. But experts agree it's not a matter of "if" only "when."

Local movie theater edition
For most moviegoers, no trip is complete without a snack or two. But just how clean are local theaters and snack bars?

Pajamas Media has run into exactly this problem - how do you promote a "blogjam", giving everyone an opportunity to write about a pre-arranged topic? You simply cannot be timely. Welcome to the world of managed media, PJM.

On the other hand, the Jacksonville Jaguars, with very little promotion, began something really exciting in the world of online publishing. Vic Ketchman is the editor and writer for the website - he has spent 34-years as a sportswriter -covering the Pittsburgh Steelers during their glory days, and the Jaguars since their inception.

On Sunday, Vic began live-blogging the Jaguars game with the Cleveland Browns. Here's the link to what he wrote.

After years of working in traditional media, Vic says the Internet is the most exciting thing he's ever been involved with.  He says he sees room for a lot of improvement in the blog entries, and promises to do even better for the upcoming Jaguars game with the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.
