Senate 2006 - Brown Cloture Vote
Wednesday, June 08, 2005 By: Juan Paxety
One of the contentious issues in Washington is the Democratic Party filibuster of judicial nominees. One of the controversial nominees is Janice Rogers Brown. Yesterday, the Senate voted cloture, meaning the Senate will vote on whether to confirm her appointment to the DC Circuit Court of Appeals.
Voting in favor of cloture were 10 Democrats, including Florida's Bill Nelson. From the LA Times:
Seven of the 10 Democrats who voted to end debate on Brown were signers of the moderates' pact: Sen. Robert Byrd of West Virginia, Sen. Daniel K. Inouye of Hawaii, Sen. Mary Landrieu of Louisiana, Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman of Connecticut, Sen. Ben Nelson of Nebraska, Sen. Mark Pryor of Arkansas, and Sen. Ken Salazar of Colorado.
They were joined by three other centrist Democrats in voting to cut off the debate on Brown: Sen. Thomas Carper of Delaware, Sen. Kent Conrad of North Dakota, and Sen. Bill Nelson of Florida.
It's my view the Republicans will have a hard time defeating Nelson, as he seems to be taking the popular side of issues such as this one. His vote on whether to confirm her will be interesting to see.
