Now, a woman is being starved to death in Georgia.
Briefly, 81-year-old Mae Magouirk had her aorta rupture and was taken to the hospital. She was fixed up and transferred to intensive care. This happened to my father about eight years ago - he's still living and doing fine. Because patients are knocked out with drugs and are intubated, they are fed and hydrated through a nasal tube for a few weeks. Mrs. Magouirk has no brain damage, she is not PVS, and was conscious until they gave her anesthesia for her surgery. She is now unconscious only because she is being drugged.
Mrs. Magouirk's granddaughter, who is not her next of kin, decided the old woman was too much trouble. She lied to the hospital, saying she had a medical power of attorney when she did not, and had her transferred to a hospice. The hospice stopped feeding her and giving her water. When Mrs. Magouirk's real next-of-kin arrived, the hospice refused to release her to their care while the granddaughter got the local probate judge to name her temporary guardian.
The judge is not a lawyer - he's a gospel singer with a TV show. He and the granddaughter say they have prayed about the situation and have decided the woman would be better off "going home to Jesus."
The woman has a living will and sets out that she wants to be fed and hydrated in her present situation. The judge has chosen to ignore the living will.
