Are There Seminar E-mailers?
Tuesday, February 18, 2003   By: Juan Paxety

Years ago, Rush Limbaugh identified a certain kind of caller he referred to as a seminar caller. It was Rush's contention that these callers had been taught a method of getting on the air and getting in talking points. The callers would begin by telling Rush they agreed with him on almost everything, that they were conservative, that they voted Republican, but ... . And then they would spout a line that was obviously a focus grouped talking point.

After Rush pointed them out, it was easy for listeners to pick these callers out themselves. They were numerous during the Clinton administration. And since the idea of war with Iraq has picked up, I here them once again calling a variety of talk shows - even the open line segments of Coast To Coast AM, the old Art Bell show. The calls are always the same - I'm conservative, but I'm against the war in Iraq. Then comes a slogan - generally "it's all about oil." Or "it's about Israel."

Now, I'm wondering if there are seminar emailers. Megan McArdle says she is stopping her blog for awhile because of the hateful e-mail she gets. Glenn Reynolds says his hate e-mail has increased drastically. An Instapundit reader suggests someone posting all of the hate e-mail, so that we netizens can see who's doing it. It would be interesting to see if it all comes from a few people.
