Al Qaeda Not POWs
Sunday, January 20, 2002 By: Juan Paxety
Michael Long has an interesting piece on the Al Queda prisoners held at Gitmo. There are two things the folks who call themselves “human rights groups” forget, or never knew. First, these prisoners are not criminals in the judicial sense. The have committed acts of war rather than acts of crime. Second, neither Al Queda nor the Taliban is a signatory to the Geneva Conventions. They don’t follow the most basic of rules set out by the conventions – that soldiers wear uniforms to distinguish themselves from non-combatants. No, the Al Queda and Taliban captives are not prisoners of war as defined – they are pirates.
